Installation of a letter drop box is the responsibility of the property owners

Polish law clearly regulates issues related to the obligation to install a letter box. According to Article 40 of the Act of 23 November 2012. Postal law, every owner or co-owner of real estate (single or multi-family building) should place a delivery box in front of the entrance door or in another, public part of the house or plot.

If you do not comply with the obligation to install a letter box, you risk a fine of PLN 50 to even PLN 10,000 . The amount of the penalty is determined each time, individually by the President of the Office of Electronic Communications (UKE), who may decide to cancel the fine in a situation where you comply with the obligation and immediately install your mailbox.

How to mount a letterbox? Start by choosing a locker and where to mount it

Before you start attaching a letterbox to the entrance gate, grid or wicket, you should know that there are strict guidelines regarding the parameters and location of the locker. Detailed regulations regulating the requirements for returning mailboxes are contained in the Regulation of the Minister of Administration and Digitization of 3 April 2014. What does this act say about the size of the box? It should accommodate an envelope measuring 229 mm x 324 mm, up to 60 mm thick.

When installing a mailbox on the property, you must also remember that it should be safe and must not pose a threat to household members, passers-by or deliverers. Make sure that no sharp edges, screws or fasteners protrude from the box. How high to put the locker? According to the Regulation, it may not be lower than 700 mm, counting from the ground to the lower edge of the box, and not higher than 1600 mm, from the ground to the upper edge of the last box.

How to mount a letterbox on the fence?

Assembling a mailbox is not a difficult task, but its exact fastening is crucial – it depends on it whether the metal structure will stay on the fence and maintain its aesthetic appearance. Such a metal storage compartment should ultimately serve for many years and effectively resist downpours, gales, varied temperatures and moisture. How do I install it?

There are 2 methods of mounting a letter box, depending on the type of substrate:

• gluing (works well on walls, sheet metal, wood),

• drilling (this method works well in the case of mesh, panel, openwork – forged fences).

Simple mounting accessories will be used to fix the box on the fence: screws with nuts and handles – preferably metal and galvanized, resistant to mechanical damage and rust. Instead of metal handles, you can also use a wooden, impregnated strip of larch or pine wood, remembering that no sharply pointed elements protrude from it.

How do I mount a letterbox on a grid?

To fix the letter box on the fence grid , a screwdriver, a drill-screwdriver or a  screwdriver is enough. Before you get to work, check that the manufacturer has prepared mounting holes – if there are none, measure the distances between the chuck holes, and then make culverts using a metal drill. Then prepare the screws and flat bars to attach the box to the grid.

To efficiently and precisely install the locker, ask someone for assistance. While you will be fitting the screws from the frontal side, your helper will secure the flat bars in the desired position and help you embed the mounting screws in them. At the end of the work, you should make sure that the box is stationary and rigidly adheres to the grid. If necessary, tighten the screws, leaving no slack.

How to mount a letterbox on the gate?

When assembling the letterbox on the gate, remember not to damage the steel structure of the span. Do not make holes directly in the gate, because it may turn out that in a few years you will decide to change the location or type of locker, and unsightly holes will remain, becoming a focus of rust. Also take care of the aesthetics of your entrance by choosing a box and mounting elements in the same color.

To fix the box on the gate, use a simple, non-invasive method, screwing the metal container to the flat bars, located on the inside of the property. In order to connect the letter container with a metal handle (flat bar ), apply 4 screws with nuts, tighten them sensitively until you feel that the box is already properly stiffened. To make it easier to assemble, involve one person to help you, whose task will be to support the flat bars and the box.
