Canopies for fence posts – what is worth knowing about them?

Overlays in the form of canopies on fence posts effectively protect the interior of steel fence profiles and structures made of pipes, protecting them from rust and destruction. What are the advantages, properties, types and sizes of canopies available on the market? We answer this question in our article.

Canopies for posts and their construction

Canopies for fence posts, also called interchangeably overlays, caps, hoods, plugs or caps, are usually made of plastic (polyethylene), which is distinguished by durability, resistance to adverse weather conditions, such as: high and low temperatures, variable humidity and UV radiation. There are also hoods in a metal version, produced from raw sheet metal or coated with an anti-corrosion layer.

In stores and construction wholesalers, the overlays can be purchased in three basic versions: round (diameters: fi 42 mm, fi 48 mm, fi 51mm, 60 mm), square or envelope (50 mm x 50 mm, 80 mm x 80 mm, 100 mm x 100 mm) and rectangular (standard size: 60 mm x 40 mm). The edges of the canopies for fence posts are most often finished with a ball, which facilitates both the installation and elimination of condensate.

Functional hoods for posts

Post overlays are small but very practical additions, without which metal profiles are particularly susceptible to corrosion and lose their aesthetic qualities. The canopies are available in many different colors: black, graphite, anthracite, green, brown or gray, which makes them easy to fit visually to the rest of the fence elements.

Plastic caps have a universal application – they will be used both to seal fence posts, as well as gates or wickets. Another advantage is durability, because once installed, the overlay will successfully serve for many years without the need for disassembly or replacement.

Simple installation of canopies for fence profiles

Installation of lightweight, profiled plastic overlays does not require specialist knowledge, the purchase of expensive tools, silicone or glue. Strong hands are enough to put them on, and the installation process itself takes only a few moments. To protect the profile or pipe, it is enough to put the cap on the upper, steel tip and press it properly.

In the case of mounting the cap on old metal posts , it is worth checking the technical condition of pipes or profiles before applying the plastic cap. It may be necessary to pre-clean them from accumulated sand, dust and dust, and if foci of rust are visible, they should be removed and the metal elements secured with a protective primer.

Metal canopies for fence posts

An alternative to plastic caps, used as a protection for fence posts with a round, square or rectangular cross-section, are metal canopies – tin, straight or profiled – with additional decorations in the form of grooves, protruding tips or balls. They are designed for assembly by welding, riveting or gluing, depending on the manufacturer's recommendations.

Products in the form of metal canopies are less and less often used in system and panel fences, because, unlike plastic overlays, they require more complex assembly, they can also corrode. They work well as protection for posts other than system posts, for example those made by hand from pipes or profiles or occurring in forged fences, on request.

Canopies for concrete and brick posts

On the pillars of fences other than panel and mesh, for example brick, concrete or stone, you can see covers in a more sophisticated form than system plastic overlays or tin caps. Canopies have a twofold function in them: it is a stylish decoration and a protective element, a cover against moisture and weakening of the brick structure.

Fence canopies, designed to protect and finish brick, clinker or concrete posts, are made of various materials: concrete (in the form of ready-made prefabricated elements), ceramic caps and tiles. The covers are available in one-, two- and hip versions, and less often in the flat option.
