Installation of the fence mesh on uneven terrain

Installation of the fence mesh on uneven terrain

What to do if your plot is located on uneven terrain and you want to fence it? If you do not have the opportunity to level the surface using heavy equipment, the only thing left for you is to build a fence adapted to the existing conditions. What is the installation of a fence mesh on sloping ground? You will find tips in our article.

Mesh fence on uneven terrain – start with measurements

Before you buy material for the fence of your plot, you should make field measurements and check what is the angle of inclination of its surface. You will find data on this subject in the maps developed by the surveyor, you can also calculate the slope of the terrain yourself – for this you need to collect several data: relative height and length between two opposite points.

How to calculate the angle of inclination of the terrain? Divide the height by length, then multiply by 100 percent. In the fencing industry, there is a rule that fences located on plots whose slope angle exceeds 24 percent should be additionally strengthened, for example by building individual sections in a cascade system (most often these are panel spans).

If you want to have a durable and aesthetic fence made of galvanized or coated mesh, the installation should be commissioned by an experienced team of professionals who will use the appropriate fence construction technique. On uneven terrain, it is best to set the grid parallel to the ground, without using the so-called stepped – a foundation falling along the border of the plot in the form of stairs.

How to plan the layout of subsequent sections of the fence on uneven terrain? You must remember to maintain proportions and equal spacing of 2.5 or 3 m between the next middle and initial posts. The correct embedding of the posts is also of key importance in the context of durability and stability of the mesh fence – they should be precisely positioned vertically and deeply concreted, below the ground freezing level (80-100 cm, depending on the region).

How to make a mesh fence on uneven terrain?

When you already have the material and proceed to the construction of a mesh fence on a sloping plot, you should start the work by delineating the initial posts (in the place of the future gate) and corner posts. Only after determining their location, you can determine the position of the middle pillars using the measuring tape and stakes. If the terrain has significant unevenness, instead of 3 m, use distances of 2.5 m, making the grid more stable.

Corner fence posts are secured with additional, side supports (braces), which during many years of use will strengthen the posts and take over their load. When the concrete begins to dry, inspect the setting. The supports should also be concreted (vertical and horizontal) of all columns, and if necessary – for the time of tying, set additional, side reinforcements from boards or bars on uneven ground.

Installation of a fence mesh on a sloping plot: how to do it?

After setting the supporting elements, you can proceed to the installation of the fence mesh. For this you need several tools  and accessories: clamps, tensioners, galvanized wire (or: galvanized, coated PVC), designed to stabilize the mesh along its entire length, grommets and tension bars (flat bars). During the work, pliers, a cutter and a spirit level are also necessary to control the arrangement of the grid.

Spread the grid on a flat ground and set an equal height at the top and bottom (this is necessary because after unfolding the roller, it often turns out that the mesh line is uneven). If necessary – connect the fragments of the mesh using a zigzag, single wire, attached to the roller. Attach tensioners to the starting posts, and fix the grommets on the center poles. Through the ends of the mesh pass the tension rods. Assembly begin by stretching the wire in the upper part, hook the ends of the mesh on it, attach the bars to the posts, thread the middle and lower wires, and finally stretch the mesh again.

3D panel fence on sloping terrain, an alternative to traditional mesh

With a large slope of the terrain, the installation of a fence mesh may turn out to be impossible for two reasons: the fence will be unstable or unsightly. An alternative is fence panels, which you can successfully install on your plot in the form of steps (cascade) or linearly – if the slope of the area is small. It is a very popular solution in Poland, and inexpensive, durable panels are easy to install.

A big challenge during the construction of the fence is to make a concrete foundation, especially on uneven ground. Instead of thinking about how to make a foundation for a fence, you can use ready-made solutions and prefabricated systems: foundation slabs and fasteners. Prefabricated elements, matched to the panels, you can buy directly from a manufacturer such as STAL, a specialist in the fencing industry, operating on the market since 2007.
