Mole net – what is worth knowing about it?
Are you setting up a lawn on your property and worried that moles will destroy it? There is a simple way to effectively discourage these small, insectivorous creatures from plundering green spaces. Before you make a soil replacement and plant grass around the house, prepare a permanent protection against pests. All you need is a net for a lawn for moles. Check out what you need to know about it.
Meet the enemy, that is: why moles destroy lawns?
The mole is a small but very clever mammal. You will recognize him by his characteristic black fur, elongated nose and pink paws, ending with long, sharp claws, adapted for digging tunnels. The basis of the diet of this popular pest are earthworms and insect larvae, hidden in the ground – the mole catches them in underground tunnels, which it digs at a depth of 50 cm to 10-20 cm.
How will you recognize that the mole has settled on your plot? The characteristic sign of this small intruder are mole trees, that is, earthy mounds. Usypiska can reach a height of 20-50 cm, depending on the peculiarities of the soil and how long the pest has been operating. On fertile, earthworm-rich soil, the mole is able to survive up to 4 years. Unstoppable in time, the animal can build an advanced system of tunnels, several dozen or several hundred meters long!

Lawn net – effective protection against mole
Moles are very clever animals that, in pursuit of food, will easily dig a complex system of tunnels under your lawn. The only 100% effective way to avoid mole invasion is to install a special meshed plastic mesh. The material is sold in rolls and you will find it in stores and gardening or construction wholesalers.
Carefully laid mole net is an impassable barrier for these pests. Densely intertwined eyelets prevent the animal from squeezing into the top layer of hummus and building tunnels-traps. Plastics, from which lawn nets are made, is a very durable material, resistant to moisture and mechanical damage. The mole is not able to destroy or gnaw through it, and the turf looks aesthetically pleasing for many years.
Grass net: why is it worth putting it on?
A new lawn or flower bed is a big expense. So it is not surprising that you want to enjoy the beautiful vegetation as long as possible and avoid losses caused by moles. What are the advantages of a grass net and why is it worth putting it underground? The benefits you have really many:
-
the net prevents moles from building hunting tunnels – for several years you have an aesthetic, beautiful lawn,
-
pests are not able to damage the roots of plants: grass, saplings and flowers,
-
the ground of the lawn remains even, without recesses and protrusions,
-
the soil under the lawn does not sterilize and does not overdry.
Polypropylene lawn mesh provides long-term protection against moles, does not tear and does not deteriorate under the influence of UV rays and water. It is a durable, invisible barrier that you can install very quickly without having to involve a professional or rent expensive tools. Polypropylene is a non-toxic material, so it will work well for both the construction of a decorative lawn and a vegetable garden.

Installation of a mole net – it is worth remembering
How to lay a plastic mesh under the lawn? Installation is very simple and you can do it in a few steps:
-
First, plan where you want to sow grass and calculate how many meters of mole net you need.
-
Then make an even trench, removing about 8-10 cm of earth. (If you want to plant saplings or perennial flowers with an extensive root system, adjust the depth of the trench to the specifics of the plants.)
-
When the hole is ready, carefully arrange the mesh strips in it (using the overlap method) and secure them with mounting clips.
When preparing a hole for the lawn, remove from it any roots, debris and stones that could damage the material. When you connect all the strips of the mesh, fill the trench with the previously selected hummus. Remember to additionally secure the side walls of the hole – if you do not do this, the mole will find a passage and will enter the lawn.
Metal and plastic mesh for lawn – price
How much does a mole grille cost? The price of a roll is currently an expense of PLN 50-300, depending on:
-
manufacturer,
-
material (polypropylene, galvanized steel with PVC layer),
-
roller length (25 m, 50 m, 100 m, 200 m),
-
mesh weight (applies to plastic mesh, most often it is 25-27 g / m2)
-
eyelets (the meshes can be in the form of squares in size: 10 mm x 10 mm or 13 mm x 13 mm, 10 mm x 14 mm or hexagons 23-25 mm).
On the Polish market you can also find a polypropylene mesh for moles with a very fine mesh: 3 mm x 3 mm. It is used both for protection against the pest and for the rapid rooting of various grass species. A roll of such braid costs about 100 zlotys. Are you afraid that a mole could damage the plastic grille? Choose a steel mesh with a layer of zinc and PVC. It is more expensive – 25 m of material is an expense of PLN 150.
