Installation of barbed wire on the fence

Barbed wire on the fence has been considered for years one of the most effective ways to protect private land from unwanted visitors. Many homeowners and businesses are wondering if barbed wire can be installed on their fence and what laws govern this issue. You can find answers to these questions in our article.

Barbed wire, or linear structural element

By definition, barbed wire is a linear structural element, both for the fences of private premises and for the creation of military fences. In the standard version, such a structure consists of two galvanized or coated wires, on which coils are attached at regular intervals, finished with double or quadruple sharp tips or razor blades.

The use of barbed wire is now very wide and can be found almost anywhere in the world. The history of this invention began in 1874 – it was then that the American farmer Joseph Glidden, who created the original wire fence and saw that the sticking sharp tips effectively discourage potential intruders, including wild animals, from entering his property. Today, barbed wire is produced on a massive scale, and each country has its own regulations governing who can install it and when.

Even accidental hooking on the wire can result in serious injuries, cuts, including loss of health, so the guidelines for the installation of such protections are regulated by the Polish Building Law Act. The rules cover many different aspects and, for example, institutions such as prisons and military units have much greater opportunities for barbed wire than private owners.

The usual backyard fence, in accordance with Article 29 of the Building Law, does not require a permit, and the construction of a fence with a height of more than 220 cm must only be reported to the local court. If, on the other hand, you planto install barbed wire, which poses a potential danger to humans andanimals, then according to § 41 – 43 of Chapter 9. Regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure of 12 April 2002 on the technicalconditions to be met by buildings and their location , the wire must not beat a height of less than 1,8 metres.

How to mount barbed wire?

There are several different barbed wire assembly techniques that are worth knowing before proceeding. The wire is usually placed on top of the fence, parallel to the ground in the form of one or more lines, but it can also be made on a ship, that is, in a spiral. To fix the wire on the grid or fence panels,a galvanized single- or two-arm boom is required.

You attach the barbed wire booms directly to the fence posts, usually at a 45 degree angle, which will create a stable, impact-resistant barrier. On the booms you can spread one or more wire lines, depending on your design. Choose high-quality booms – choose galvanized models to make sure they last for years.

Barbed wire – which one to choose?

Polish Building Law does not specify the issue of the type of barbed wire, which gives owners of private premises the right to choose different products. The most common on the Polish market today are galvanized wires, un galvanized and coated with a layer of PVC plastic in green, black or gray. When choosing, remember that the zinc layer prolongs the life of the wire and effectively protects it from the harmful effects of moisture or temperature fluctuations, thereby eliminating the risk of corrosion.

Galvanized wires in rolls of 50, 100, 150 or even 400 meters of running meters can be purchased from a proven manufacturer, such as Lodz STEEL, in the online www.tanidrut.com. Depending on the specifics of your fence, you will adjust different weights and diameters of the wire, from 1.6 mm to 2.8 mm. The price of barbed wire is on average about 60-70gr per current meter.

Installation of barbed wire – safety rules

The installation of barbed wire requires special precautions by persons performing such a task. Metal pointed spikes and sharp razor blades from everywhere pose a serious threat, as any reckless movement of the fitter can result in damage to health, deep slits or hard-to-heal stab wounds.

So what are the OSH measures available? Protecting your hands and forearms is crucial, so when working with barbed wire, you need to equip yourself with specialized long anti-cut and anti-piercing gloves that meet international standards for mechanical protection gloves (including standards such as ISO 13997: 2003 and EN 388:2016). During installation, also organize appropriate technical support, that is, at least one person who will help you safely and efficiently unfold barbed wire.
